What are Keywords?

A word or a small group of words that describe the basic idea behind a whole article or blog is a keyword.

When a user makes a ‘search query’ on a search engine, you appear on the SERP( Search Engine Result Page) only if you have relevant keywords in association with the query. A good set of keywords gives you a better chance of appearing on the search result pages.

How do Keywords help in SEO?

We create content to drive traffic to our website. Keywords are the links that connect the search queries with the content that we have. It is an effective means to appear in the SERPs and hence drive organic traffic to the website.

Keywords are important in order to get identified. Even though what you offer and what your audience wants are expressed with slight differences, the keywords always remain constant. This establishes a connection between your content and their queries which in turn brings you to search result page.

Short and Long Tail Keywords

Short tail keywords or head terms are compact terms which can have a considerably broad set of results. It has high potential to drive organic traffic but it comes with huge competition. It is almost impossible to head to the top by pushing the already existing big shots.

On contrary to this, the long tails keywords are made up of 3-5 words with lesser potential to drive organic traffic but it is more specific and concept oriented. Hence the traffic brought in by long keywords will essentially be the kind of traffic you are looking for. These are highly cost-effective with less competition.

Where to Employ Keywords?

An excellent combination of short and long tail keywords bring the much-needed traffic to your website. Each and every page of your website should contain your keywords.

  • URL: Your primary keyword should be a part of your webpage URL.
  • Meta description: Meta description, an HTML attribute, is a brief summary of your webpage that is often displayed by Google. Including your elementary keywords in your meta description can highly influence your site traffic.
  • Alt image text: Images increase the appeal of your content greatly but what most of us don’t realize is that it has a hidden capacity to increase the SEO as well. The alt image text is the keyword-included-description that we associate with the image to get noticed by the search engines.
